Located at the center of Hanoi and designed by local H&P Architects, Cheering Restaurant has been inspired by the ancient trees and the life on the traditional sidewalk where activities, such as the sharing of cuisine, happen day and night.

The restaurant contains the essence of Vietnamese cuisine culture on sidewalk and creates special experiences for the users bringing people closer to nature.

The space is renovated from a long-closed project which still remains steel frame structure and reusable covering materials such as: glass, steel, bar steel, sheet-metal roof.

The restaurant design merges structure and covering, ceiling and wall and blurs the boundary between inside and outside through the use of sheet glass ‘walls’ and an opaque ceiling which open to the Hanoi landscape and view.

The large wooden canopy which defines the restaurant’s interior creates continuity between the dining areas and contributes to merge the inside and outside spaces. The interior blends seamlessly with the exterior as plant boxes bring the greenery inside.

The inverse pyramid stacking, builds upwards to form the roof. Each column is made of timber layers stacked perpendicularly to each other and gradually spreading upwards like tree roots and forming a makeshift playground to climb, allowing even the roof space to be enjoyed.

The covering wood is selected to resist the tropical climate and the lattice of timber beams provides shades from the region’s hot sun.

A tree trunk dominates behind the central bar, drawing nature into the space.

The “tree roots” continue growing alternately to make a stable frame which helps reducing heat and creating various shadows from the polycarbonate roof.

In the middle of the roof is an air cushion which is cooled and cleaned automatically by water spraying system linked to the rainwater collection tank, allowing the atmosphere to be controlled.

The restaurant design by H&P Architects expresses a dialogue between the region’s contemporary architecture and the context full of historical and cultural values, while still contributes to reshape the urban and architectural picture in Hanoi central area.

Cheering Restaurant by is one of the hospitality project shortlisted for the LEAF Award 2015.
