Vivarium is a new restaurant in Bangkok, built within a decommissioned warehouse, serving a fusion of Thai and Japanese cuisine.

Interior Design firm HYPOTHESIS was invited to design the concept and branding of a new type of restaurant in Thailand. The brand and name of the space, Vivarium, is a portmanteau of Viva (life) and Terrarium.

Inspired by the industrial characteristics of the warehouse, Hypothesis preserved existing materials within the structure and cladding whilst adding contemporary additions and a vibrant use of colour.

Red primer color inspired by the red masala spice had been used for the branding of the restaurant and the interior structures were painted in the same colour.

Hypothesis combined objects found from around the site – iron doors, steel pipes and tree roots – with actual living landscape designed by ban kam pu, ceramic follies designed by yarnnakarn and façade design by Stu/D/O transforming the interior of the space into a terrarium.

Vivarium Restaurant by Hypothesis is one of the shortlisted project for the INSIDE – World Festival of Interiors 2015 Award.
